Fashion rules have been a constant part of my life for as long as I can remember.  I grew up, as a teenager, in the 80's, and it was a tough time to be a plus size teen. At the time, I was between a size 14 and 18 throughout that decade, and I was forced to either dress like my grandmother or shop the men's department. I did a mix of both. I never want to see another pair of polyester pants with front stitched creases ever again. Maybe that's why I tend to shy away from elastic waist pants to this day. It still haunts me.

Now that I am older, there IS more fashion accessible to me, but those fashion rules have now evolved into other areas. I'm 46 now, and am told I'm too old to wear this or that. I have to question that -- how is a 46-year-old woman supposed to dress? What are we supposed to look like?  Two of my most favorite styles, in the world, are florals and moto jackets. According to those pesky fashion rules, big girls should not wear prints and women above the age of 35 should not wear moto jackets. Isn't that the most ridiculous thing you have ever heard?

Why can't I wear what I love? Fashion is all about expressing yourself. When you wear what you love, that makes you happy and boosts your confidence. It also empowers you to want to try new styles and play with fashion. If I am limited by size (and now age), how am I supposed to express myself?  None of us should be limited in life. If fashion is self-expression, that means we're essentially having our expressive natures stifled. Who created these fashion rules anyway? I'd love to know.

I made the decision, a long time ago, that I would never let a fashion rule dictate how I live my life. Florals have come a long way, and are now so much fun and soooo pretty. I love trying new things to see how they fit in with my style, and florals are definitely my jam.  I also think I look pretty damn good in florals, so I am proof that a plus size woman can wear prints.  As for me being too old to wear moto jackets, I would like to quote my 10-year-old niece, Angel, who eloquently once said:  "Dress how you want to be!"  And if moto jackets are a style you love, I don't care if you're 15 or 95, wear it and love life. That's what I'm doing one day at a time.

Be unapologetically you. No limits, no compromises, no worries. And just live! Dress who you want to be, and your spirit will thank you.

So true! There are no fashion rules, except for one which was shared with me recently: “If its not a hell yes, its a hell no.” :)

I’m with you. I decided a while ago to let fashion rules go out the window and wear what I want. You look fab!
